What is Meditation and Mindfulness?
Meditation and mindfulness are whatever you want them to be—structured, fluid, guided, or simply a quiet moment with your breath. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. What matters most is giving yourself the gift of stepping away from the daily hustle, even for just a few minutes, to recharge and reconnect with yourself.
So don’t worry about how long, when, or even how you do it—just make space for it. Whether it’s deep breathwork, a peaceful walk, or simply sitting in stillness, each moment of mindfulness is a powerful act of self-care.
Love for all,
Mary
So what is meditation and mindfulness?
Meditation
Meditation is simply the practice of quieting your mind from all of the random thoughts we all experience throughout the day. Instead of thinking about what needs to be done, where you need to be, or who you need to be; you practice a moment of silence in your mind. A quiet space.
Let's practice.... take a deep breathe and hold for four seconds...did you hear that? the nothingness...the stillness...that's where meditation starts.
As a beginner, you might only experience moments of mental stillness lasting 5-10 seconds at a time. Don't worry - this is normal! With regular practice, these peaceful moments naturally extend. After about 4 months, you might enjoy up to 10 minutes or more in this calm mental state.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, cultivating awareness of thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment. It encourages a deep connection to the here and now, helping individuals respond to life with clarity and intention rather than reacting impulsively.
Let's practice...take a bit out of a piece of fruit (or your choice of a snack)...but instead of going in and taking a swift and effective bite...slow down your experience of the moment. Feel all of the sensations in your teeth, your lips, your jaw. Do you feel any pain anywhere? Any tension? Or, does everything feel cool or warm? What do you smell in this moment? Does the smell remind you of any other time or place? Is your stomach growling with anticipation? What is your mind saying to you in this moment? This is mindfulness.
It's taking a moment to recognize all of the sensations we feel and experience throughout the day. Either consciously or unconsciously. Whether through meditation, breathwork, or simply paying attention to daily activities, mindfulness fosters inner peace, resilience, and emotional balance.

Buddhist meditation includes Vipassana (insight meditation) for self-awareness, Metta (loving-kindness) for compassion, and Zazen (seated Zen meditation) for deep presence. Hindu meditation incorporates Transcendental Meditation (mantra repetition) and Yoga Nidra (guided relaxation).

Getting Started
Getting started with meditation and mindfulness is simpler than you might think—it’s all about creating space for awareness and presence.
Begin by finding a quiet, comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus on your breathing, sensations, or a calming mantra. When your mind wanders (which it will!), gently bring your attention back without judgment to either your breath or the mantra you began focusing on.
Start with just a few minutes a day and gradually increase as it feels right. Whether through guided meditations, mindful walking, or simply pausing to appreciate the present moment, mindfulness is about embracing awareness in everyday life.
